Audition Information
Auditions are open to all OCEAN K-12 students and are required to act in the play. First Audition will include games, physical theatre exercises, and improvisation. Callback Auditions (for Middle & High School students by invitation) will include readings from the script. Students will be excused from regular classes, if needed, in order to audition.
*Important: All students interested in acting in “The Hobbit” must fill out our digital Audition Form BEFORE Auditioning.
- Cast size will be limited due to costuming constraints as well as creating a manageable and enjoyable environment for all involved.
- Not all students who audition are guaranteed an acting role.
- Major (speaking) roles will likely be played by Middle & High School students, many of whom will be double-cast as giant/shadow puppeteers.
- There will be just a few roles for younger Elementary students, most likely as Goblins.
- Casting will be informed, in part, by actor availability.
In order for the play to be successful, your commitment and dependability in coming to rehearsals on-time is critical. Plays are unique in that the cast and crew are dependent on each other. If you miss a rehearsal, it impacts everyone in your scene, including staff.
Some extracurricular activities are not compatible with acting in the play (e.g. Middle and High School winter sports that require 5 days/week practices and Saturday games.)
Please only audition and say yes to the play if you are genuinely able and willing to commit and come to all rehearsals that you are called. Please do not audition if you have significant non-negotiable schedule conflicts (see general rehearsal / performance schedule below.)
Media Release
Participation in The Hobbit will require a parent or guardian to sign a media release form, allowing video, audio, and still photograph media to be used for the purposes of promoting The Hobbit and fundraising on any and all standard channels.

Preparing for Auditions
OCEAN Middle & High Schoolers:
Feel free to look over the following 6 "Audition Sides" (short scenes) before Callbacks on Wed, Dec. 4th; 1:15-4 PM. (All actors are required to stay for the entire time.)
There is no need to memorize these scenes but the more familiar students are with them, the freer they will feel to act them well at Callbacks. Students will not be forced to read a scene if they don't feel ready and not everyone will read every scene they wish. It will be a combination of actor request and what the director wishes to see read for. (e.g. We will not have time for everyone to read for Gollum.) We are also looking to see combinations of actors working together, and we will not necessarily cast the "best reader." We aim to make casting decisions that are good for the play and also reasonable challenges for individual student actors.
Thank you for your understanding of the process!
In case your child prefers to hear text verses read it... below is an audio version of the audition sides for The Hobbit! By providing an audio and print recording, my hope is to provide more access to more kids and help students be as comfortable as possible for the audition.
The sides are read without expression as to not influence your child's amazing performance and interpretation!
Rehearsals
Rehearsals will begin January 6th, 2025 at the
Jefferson County Fairgrounds Art Building.
It's important to note that not all actors will be required at all rehearsals. Scenes are worked on individually, sometimes several per session, and only the actors in a particular scene will be required to be present - this is especially true during January & February.
Weekend rehearsals will be where the scenes are put together into a cohesive play. They will be long days, and we will keep families updated as to how to make them successful.
