For Release
“The Hobbit” is based on the beloved book by J.R.R. Tolkien, who is considered the “father” of modern fantasy literature and has influenced generations of writers since “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” trilogy was written.
Fans of the book and movie can expect Bilbo the hobbit, Gandalf the wizard, dwarves, elves, goblins, a giant dragon, and of course, Gollum! This exciting youth project provides the opportunity to make theater not only fun and entertaining, but also a powerful multi-generational educational experience as participants range from grades 2 - 12.
This ambitious production features costumes by Libby Wennstrom, giant puppets and shadow puppetry under the guidance of Puppet Masters, Celia Fulton-Walden and Thaddeus Jurczynski, and live music led by Kristin Smith.
“The Hobbit” is directed by Marc Weinblatt, a professional theater director, educator, activist, and long-time OCEAN parent. Marc recently directed last year’s OCEAN
Port Townsend Youth Theater Company & OCEAN K-12
production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Previously he directed (with Rowen DeLuna) 5 OCEAN student productions from 2011-2015. Marc has also directed multiple adult plays locally for Key City Public Theatre, including acclaimed Shakespeare-in-the-Park productions of “The Tempest” and “Hamlet.”
Port Townsend’s OCEAN program is a hybrid homeschool / in-person program which has seen immense growth since the Pandemic. After a successful go at producing 2024’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” for the school, Danny & Tobi McEnerney and their newly formed non-profit, Port Townsend Youth Theater Company, were tapped to lead the charge for “The Hobbit.” According to the McEnerney’s, the production has garnered the support of local artists and community members in a profound and inspirational way.
There will be 5 performances of “The Hobbit” at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Erickson building: Thursday, March 13th at 7PM, Sunday, March 16 at 2 PM, Friday, March 21 at 7 PM, Saturday, March 22 at 2 PM, and Sunday, March 23 at 2 PM. All shows are by donation at the door. Please note, some scenes may be scary for very young children.
